Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba says his ministry will pull out all the stops to ensure the national rugby 7s team will maintain the topflight status after reclaiming their place in the HSBC World Rugby Series last Sunday.
The ministry awarded the side Ksh 5.7 million for their feat that saw Shujaa return to the topflight rugby after they were relegated to Challenger Series last year. Each player and technical bench will get KSh 300,000.
In order to achieve this, the CS said they would roll out measures to build and renovate rugby stadiums in the country adding that besides financial support, facilities were the biggest catalyst for long-term development of the sport in the country
Namwamba spoke on Wednesday when he treated the Shujaa squad to elegant dinner to celebrate their return to the core status after thrashing Germany 33-15 in the winner take-all relegation-promotion playoff held in Madrid.
With the government currently renovating and building new football facilities with Afcon 2027 in mind, the CS said there was also need to have rugby facilities matching up to the international standards as a way of creating room to tap new talents.
