At least 17 pupils have been confirmed dead at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri, following a fire tragedy last night.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident with the Star.

She said 14 other students sustained injuries.

“We have 17 pupils dead and 14 injured. We are investigating the cause and take necessary action,” she said.

The pupils are said to have been burnt beyond recognition.

One of the dormitories housing the students was razed down killing the 16.

15 of them are said to have been confirmed dead at the scene while one died while being rushed to the hospital.

There are fears that more bodies are likely to be recovered once the scene is fully processed.

President William Ruto called the fire “horrific” and devastating”, and has ordered an investigation.

“Those responsible will be held to account,” Mr Ruto posted on X platform.

A team of investigators has been deployed to the school, police said.

“The bodies recovered at the scene were burnt beyond recognition,” Ms Onyango told AFP news agency.

Deputy Director DCI John Onyango, Senior Assistant IG, and Director Homicide Unit and NPS Disaster Management Unit are on their way to the school.

The scene has been preserved awaiting the homicide team.

All response teams were sent to the scene to help the situation.

Parents and guardians of the pupils have also been alerted.
